The Top British Baby Names List: Our Favorite Picks!

The UK released its top baby names list, and Oliver and Amelia are still on top. But some favorites from across the pond aren't quite as popular in the U.S.

The United Kingdom finally released its top baby names list, and Oliver and Amelia still came out on top. (Neither was in the top 10 here in the U.S.—Oliver came in at number 32 and Amelia was number 15.) But surprisingly, we don't see a lot of crossover between the U.S. and U.K. list. Names like Poppy and Alfie, which don't even chart in the top 1000 here, are top 20 favorites over there.

Here are some of my favorites from across the pond that haven't quite become as popular here in the U.S.

Girl Names

Florence You can bet that rock act Florence + the Machine is behind the new popularity of this name, currently number 26 on their list.

Thea This shortened relation to Theodore ranks near number 80 in the U.K., but just hit the top 1000 in the U.S. this year.

Ivy This plant is often associated with faithfulness—and makes a lovely botanical baby name.

Lottie This short form of Charlotte hit the top 100 this year, even before the royal baby name was announced. I'd expect to see it on the rise now.

Eleanor and Harriet This pair of lovely stodgy classics are side-by-side on the U.K.'s list, at numbers 60 and 61—but barely make a ripple here.

Freya The Scandinavian goddess' name just started ranking here in the U.S. last year, but it's been a U.K. favorite for some time.

Boy Names

Oscar Oscar holds steady near the top 100 here in the U.S., but it's a top 10 favorite in the U.K.

George It's no surprise that George is continuing a big wave of popularity, thanks to the adorable royal big brother—it moved up three spaces to the 7th spot on the baby names list in the U.K.

Ellis This Welsh variant on Elijah debuted in the top 100 on British charts, but it's still back in the top 500 here.

Arthur Every year I campaign for Arthur, a name with a charming vibe (it means bear), and a regular on the top 100 in the U.K. (It's only #306 here!)

Teddy and Rory We don't like nicknamey names very often in the U.S.–Teddy hasn't charted in the top 1000, and Rory's just inside the top 500 here, while they're both top 100 favorites in the U.K.
